Jane Mitchell is currently a Curriculum Coach at Normal Park Museum Magnet’s Upper School. She focuses on supporting teachers with their numeracy and literacy lessons through the modeling, co-teaching and observation of lessons. Specifically, Reader’s & Writer’s Workshop, Guided Reading, the varied components of Hamilton County’s Math curriculum, Singapore Math, and student transitions to the Upper School including Literacy Cadre Co-Leader. This position is made available through the generous support of the Public Ed Foundation and Middle Schools for a New Society.

  • Reading Intervention Specialist, Grades K-5, Normal Park Museum Magnet, 2005-2009. Supported below grade level readers and writers in small groups three to five times per week. Trained other interventionists in Guided Reading strategies and techniques. Administered DIBELS & QRI-IV to grades K-5.

  • 4th grade teacher, Normal Park Museum Magnet, 2002/03, 2003/4, & Fall 2004. Designed Module Units using Understanding by Design for Science & Social Studies including connections to 7 museums. Created Guided Reading(Jan Richardson) & Writer’s Workshop(Lucy Calkins) lessons for small group and mini-lessons. Implemented Everyday Math Curriculum and supplemented when necessary. Coordinated implementation of Word Journeys spelling curriculum. Co-Introduced concept of Academies to Lower School, in support of a greater community of educators and learners, after attending Magnet Schools of America Conference in Raleigh, NC.
