Penguins at the Aquarium

On Tuesday January 23 several first grade students assisted the Tennessee Aquarium in the grand announcement of their newest exhibit. Penguin Rocks will open in May, 2007 with two types of penguins, Macaroni and Gentoo. Dressed in furry penguin costumes the students danced their way up the escalator and into the hearts of the press and aquarium employees. Dancing to the beat of "We Will Rock You," they shared the news.

Mr. Hall, our PE teacher, is resuming his Thursday evening Family Bike Rides on the riverfront. The group (parents and students) meets at the Boathouse restaurant on Thursdays at 5:45pm and rides along the riverwalk. Parents are encouraged to ride with their children, as everyone goes at their own pace. Some parents bring younger children in trailers. This is a very casual, fun family activity to help promote exercise and getting outdoors. We particularly need more girl riders!!! Come join the fun.

The 1st NPMM Brownie Troop (Grades 1-3) meeting will be Thursday 9/7 from 3:15-4:45 in the Library. Registration fee is $10 -- SACC students must report first to aftercare and then be dismissed to Girl Scouts. The Troop will meet twice a month, on the 1st and 3rd Thursdays. Come roast marshmallows, go "camping," do fun crafts and make new friends! For more information, see our Programs.

Look for information on two new programs at NPMM this year to promote the health and safety of our children. One is through the City's "Safe Routes to Schools" program, which will partner with NPMM parents and students to designate safe walking and biking routes. The other is through the North River Community Coalition's "Healthy Community Initiative" which will promote the importance of drinking water, walking, and eating fruit to help combat childhood obesity.

Mark your calendars for Normal-Palooza - October 28, 2006! Don't miss this fun-filled event, featuring local artists, musicians, food and children's activities. To get involved in planning for Normal-Palooza, contact Debra Price, Normal-Palooza 2006 Chair at normal-palooza@comcast.net

"We're going to the zoo, zoo, zoo.." NEW this year! Normal Park Museum Magnet has added the Chattanooga Zoo as a museum partner. We are very excited about the learning expeditions our students can now take to gain first-hand experience with a wide variety of animals from around the globe. And don't forget to use your family passport to visit on your own (and earn volunteer hours)!

Cool Cafeteria - Visit our new Lego Room or computer stations in the Cafeteria (to be used by students after they finish lunch). Or, check out the new outdoor eating area! Our hope is that these changes will help create a peaceful and orderly lunch-time experience for both students and teachers.
