Safe Routes to Schools

The City's "Safe Routes to Schools" program is partnering with NPMM parents and students to designate safe walking and biking routes.

Celebrate International Walk to School Day -- Wednesday, October 4th! Join other NPMM students and their parents as we meet at Principal Jill Levine's house to walk up to school. Look for a flyer in your child's folder for more details.

Health Initiative

The North River Community Coalition's "Healthy Community Initiative" promotes the importance of drinking water, walking, and eating fruit to help combat childhood obesity.

NPMM students are encouraged to bring and refill their own water bottles and walk with their teachers for five minutes every day. The first Friday of every month is "Fruit Friday" -- every student gets a taste of a "new" fruit, provided by the NRCC. Students then rate how they like the fruit and get to experience it again in the lunch line the following week. Beginning in September, the fruits to be tasted include:

Honeydew Melon
Pineapple
Seedless Purple Grapes
Bananas
Tangerines
Strawberries
Oranges
Blueberries
Apples

Accelerated Reader

Normal Park uses the Accelerated Reader program to help motivate students to read. For every AR-qualified book they read, students can log-on to our school computers and take an associated comprehension test about that book. Successful completion of each "test" earns students AR points, which they can redeem for prizes such as a free ice cream, hats, tshirts, and ultimately -- a slumber party in the school library! If your NPMM student would like to access a list of books that are on our AR list (they will need to take the tests at school), go to the following link:

AR in the Afternoon. The library is open from 3:00-5:30 for Accelerated Reader on Wednesday afternoons. Parents may come to the library with their child(ren) and read and take AR tests.
