As a magnet school, NPMM has enjoyed the ability to recruit and retain some of Hamilton County's best teachers. NPMM's current teaching staff includes some of the most innovative, creative and successful teachers in the local school system. NPMM teachers annually take part in at least 40 hours of professional development beyond what is required by the school system. All faculty members have achieved state "high quality teacher" status.
NPMM classroom sizes range from 14-21 students, which is at or below BEP standards. Additionally, NPMM values individual learning styles and works to differentiate instruction for each student. Students participate daily in "learning centers," where they work independently or in small groups on specific curriculum-related tasks.
NPMM students follow a challenging standards-based curriculum combined with lessons related to exhibits in the seven museums affiliated with the school. School and museum educators work together to develop the grade-based curriculum each quarter. Students travel frequently to the museums on curriculum-based "learning expeditions", and classrooms frequently host museum and community experts as guest instructors. Each quarter, students display their learning through the actual building of curriculum exhibits, and present those exhibits to parents and the community through public "Exhibit Nights" at the school.
Teaching focuses on themes of science and social studies, with quarterly learning modules centered on such diverse topics as exploring the Oregon Trail, mapping the human body, or understanding Egyptian culture. Each student also attends weekly classes in art, music, science and Spanish, with these related arts classes being closely linked to the quarterly learning modules. Technology is infused throughout the curriculum, from writing and research to PowerPoint presentations. The result is a fun, creative and challenging academic experience with opportunities for each student to learn and grow within both individual and group dynamics. Upon graduation from NPMM, students have moved on to a variety of public and private educational opportunities in the area.
